From long before it was known that like cures like and in homoeopathy this principle was used after a modification viz. letjikes be cured by likes. Thus diseases are cured in homoeopathy by applying medicines which can produce symptoms similar to that of the diseases and finding out the totality of symptoms in a patient. Another important point is that selection of a remedy is based on the uncommon and peculiar symptoms of a patient and mental symptoms rank first in selection of remedies. When a homoeopathic medicine is administered to a patient it is capable of producing symptoms similar to that of the disease and a drug disease is produced but the dose and potency is chosen in such a manner that this drug disease is slightly stronger than the natural disease and by nature's law the natural disease is extinguished. Then, since the dose of homoeopathic medicine is very small the drug disease produced is not persistent and expelled by the vital force of the patient and the patient is cured.

The medicines are mainly derived from plant source. However, Chemicals, elements(metal or non-metal) some poisons and also diseased and healthy tissues are also used for preparation of homoeopathic medicines. After preparation of the medicines in 1/10 drug strength which is called Mother Tincture, the same is potentised by mixing with suitable quantity of alcohol or alcohol-water mixture and vigorously shaken (succussion) to produce the potentised medicines which are commonly called dilutions. The liquid dilution is then used as a remedy or soaked in sugar globules or sugar of milk for convenience of administration.
